Husband Material: HOW TO COOK OWU STEW

I decided to be the chef by once again displaying my culinary skills to cook what I termed “Owu Stew” for the home this weekend against madam’s wishes, who didn’t want me to mess up her kitchen.

In our local pidgin parlance, Owu means to be broke or without money.

So, don’t blame me o, I’m broke since both house rent and the kids school fees payment usually conspire against me in the last quarter of the year. The aura of harmattan too can only but remind one that another season of expenses – Yuletide, is around the corner. Na make man dey do jeje for this period.

Anyway, my Owu Stew only cost me below N1k. But the stew sweet die. I swear!

INGREDIENTS
Eja Kika (Smoked fish) – N400
2 Tomato Pastes – N100
2 Pepper/Onion Pastes – N100
Maggi – N50
Cray Fish – N100

DIRECTION
Cut and empty the tomato and pepper pastes into a container and mix with some water.

Add 2 or 3 cooking spoon of vegetables oil into a dry pot and set on the cooker. Ensure fire is moderate. Allow the oil to heat up well enough.

Pour mixed pastes into the hot oil and cover the pot to allow it boil for about 10 – 15 minutes. Add maggi afterwards. Then rinse the cray fish and add too.

After 5 minutes, pour the Eja Kika into the pot and allow everything to cook for another 5 – 10 minutes. Remove from the cooker and its ready to be served.

With or without vegetable soup to complement it, it can on its own be used to consume rice, yam, eba, semo, fufu, bread, etc.

You see, I never bypass the opportunity of consuming this type of smoked fish anytime I sight them while ordering for amala, ewedun and gbegiri at those joints in town. Variety, we say, is the spice of life. There’s joy beyond turkey, chicken and beef. Change is having the delicacy served at home once in awhile.

With this, I hope I have been able to convince you that my husband material is 100 yards and made up of the best fabric in town.

Did you just call me Mr. Romantic? Awww! Thank you. I’m blushing.

Will bring you something more interesting again from the home front soon again. Cheers
